Baptism, this rite of initiation into the Christian faith, is one of the major points of difference among Christians. What is its precise meaning? How is it connected to salvation? When should it be administered? The main Christian denominations provide radically different answers to these questions.

In this work, Guillaume Bourin evaluates the doctrine of baptismal regeneration, which closely links individual salvation to water baptism. He developed a convincing argument there, proposing to interpret the biblical data not as a form of baptismal symbolism, but as a means of grace. While endeavoring to demonstrate this conception of baptism, this work proposes to reform its application by keeping it rigorously within biblical parameters.

Recommendations

In this work, Guillaume Bourin presents us with a well-developed study in favor of the “evangelical” conception of baptism. Its apology is, to use the classic expression, suaviter in modo , fortiter in re . Faithful to sola scriptura , his exegetical conclusions do not lack weight and rectitude. This book represents, without a shadow of a doubt, a fine addition to the current debate on baptismal regeneration.
- RAYMOND PERRON, Ph. D., pastor, author, professor at Acadia University ( Montreal, Canada) and at the IRBS (Institute of Reformed Baptist Studies, California, United States)

I am grateful for this remarkable treatment of the connection between regeneration and baptism. Guillaume Bourin achieves an enlightening and profound synthesis of the theology of "regeneration through baptism" before basing a theological argument against it on Scripture. This erudite but affordable work will allow the reader to understand the issues and the historical and scriptural developments of these subjects.
- FLORENT VARAK, pastor, author, international director of the development of churches ENCOMPASS, professor at the Biblical Institute of Geneva

Guillaume Bourin offers a reflection on the meaning of water baptism, by comparing the different Christian traditions. He bases his commentary on a rigorous exegesis of biblical texts, including those of the Old Testament, of which he has made his specialty. He also examines the patristic sources, in order to clarify what was the vision of the Christians of the first centuries. This novel and in-depth meditation on the meaning of water baptism in the Christian faith results in an edifying synthesis for Christians, as well as for the Church and its leaders.
- FRED BICAN, pastor, professor at the Biblical Institute of Geneva, president of Action Biblique

The act of baptism expresses theological and spiritual realities. Understanding it properly is capital for evangelical faith, for the truths at stake touch on the work of salvation through the Holy Spirit and on justification by faith alone. At a time when denominational pluralism reigns, this work is a reference resource for any Church leader who has to answer the questions of people in doubt. I am very grateful for this work by Guillaume Bourin. It offers here the best resource in French on this subject. Its rigorous treatment provides well-reasoned answers to the debates raised by the baptismal ordinance.
- RAPHAËL CHARRIER, pastor, author and speaker

Guillaume Bourin signs a work that is both simple and serious. It will be useful to those interested in the question of baptism in general as well as to those who would like to carefully evaluate the different positions on the question of baptismal regeneration. By strongly affirming the principle of sola scriptura , the author assesses the different positions in the light of biblical texts, from an exegetical, historical and pastoral perspective. We are happy to recommend this book which will anchor the faith of Christians in their union with Christ and encourage them in their Christian life.
