Every human being has asked, is asking or will ask these four fundamental questions in the course of his or her life: Who am I? Why do I exist? What is wrong with the world? How can I improve what is wrong? Although these questions are not always asked out loud, the soul of every person struggles with these questions.

Let me answer these questions from the perspective of our culture, first, and then from the perspective of the Bible.

FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF OUR CULTURE

Who am I? We are an accident, a mistake. We are simply the evolution of a glorified monkey, the result of a random evolutionary process, and that is all. We have no history, and no reasoning behind our existence. We have no purpose. This is the pathetic reality of evolutionary theory. If you take the idea to its logical conclusion, human beings have no value. In the end, we are nothing.

Why do I exist? We exist to consume and enjoy. That is the only thing that matters. When the famous philanthropist John D. Rockefeller was asked about the amount of money one must have to have enough, he replied as honestly as any man has ever been, "Just a little more." Let us consume and enjoy; that is why we exist.

What is wrong with the world? People are either insufficiently educated or insufficiently governed; that is what is wrong with the world. Either people don't know enough or they are not supervised enough.

How do we improve what's wrong? The solution lies in expanding education and increasing the power in the hands of government. So we need to teach and give people more information. How do we fight AIDS? By promoting awareness about AIDS. How do we fight racism? By teaching against hate. And what about the man who beats his wife? He should be forced to take courses that will teach him how to manage his anger. By educating people, everything will be fine.

The answers provided by our culture are not enough and leave us wanting more. Let's look at how the Word of God, the Bible, answers these same questions.

ACCORDING TO THE BIBLE

Who am I? We cannot know who we are until we discover who Jesus Christ is. Jesus "is the image of the invisible God...in him all things were created...through him and for him all things were created" (Colossians 1:15,16). He is the exact representation of God. Christ is God made flesh. He is God on this earth; he is God with us, among us. The Bible states that we are created by God in his image and likeness (Genesis 1:26). So we are not the result of a random process. The Bible says that whether we are tall and beautiful or short and not so beautiful, whether our bodies function perfectly well or are severely deformed, we are the crowning glory of God and, therefore, we have intrinsic dignity, value and worth.

Why do I exist? "All things were created by him and for him...so that in everything they might be first" (Colossians 1:16b-18). The purpose of everything is to bring glory and honor to Jesus Christ. That is why we exist. Therefore, contrary to what our culture says, the reason for our existence goes far beyond consumption and pleasure.

What is wrong with the world? Me. You. Though we are the crowning glory of God, created to live and to glorify and honor Jesus Christ, we are hostile and disobedient to the one by whom and for whom we were created. "We all went astray like sheep, each one following his own way" (Isaiah 53:6). The Bible calls this disobedience to God "sin" and says that "all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23). To summarize, sin is really at the root of what is wrong with the world.
How can we improve what is wrong? Sin, representing what is wrong with our world, can only be transformed by Christ's atoning and substitutionary death. "He [Jesus] has now reconciled you by his death in the body of his flesh, so that you may appear before him as holy, without blemish and without blame" (Colossians 1:21b, 22). Indeed, there is no other way to be reconciled to God. "There is salvation in no other; for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12).

In the Bible, it is written: "He who knew no sin made him sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in him" (2 Corinthians 5:21). No other accomplishment could have allowed God to be both the righteous one and the one who justifies us. Thus, in his mercy, God the Father punished his Son in our place to satisfy his righteous anger against sin. Our only hope is to believe in Jesus, who was crucified for us and rose again (see 1 Corinthians 1:23; 15:3,4). The sinless Lamb of God gave his life to pay a debt that was not his own, on behalf of sinners who can never repay him.

THE ULTIMATE RESPONSE

These two types of answers - from our culture's point of view and according to the Bible - when placed side by side, reveal something very interesting. With the answers given from our culture's point of view, we find ourselves worthless, empty and hopeless. We seek, in our own ways, satisfaction...which we will never find. However, the Bible says that we are valuable, that we have a purpose, and that we have been redeemed.

The only way to change what is wrong with our lives is to believe what the Bible says. We must believe that Jesus suffered the punishment for our sins in our place by dying on the cross as a substitute for us. We must also believe that he rose from the dead three days later, showing that the Lord accepted his death on the cross as payment for the debt of sin we owed to God. If we believe this to be true, we must repent (turn away completely) from our sinful life and place our faith in Jesus Christ. God promises that if we confess with our mouths the Lord Jesus, and believe with all our hearts that God raised him from the dead, we will be saved (Romans 10:9).

Christ is therefore the answer to the great questions of life. Those who walk according to the pleasures of this world will never be satisfied with the answers found there. Christ is the only one who can answer our questions and satisfy us. Have you entrusted your life to Him?
