"You are not far from the kingdom of God" , said Jesus to a man who understood that the way to God is not through ceremonies or the works of man, but in an interior renewal. Yet, although close, this man could not fully trust in Christ.

A lot of people are in this position. They heard the message from the Bible. They understand that they are sinners and deserve the condemnation of a holy God. They see that Christ is the true and only Savior, and they would like to become Christians. But some misconceptions about God prevent them from coming fully in faith in Christ.

They have come to the narrow gate that stands at the entrance to the path that leads to eternal life. But, for one reason or another, they stay outside, not daring to cross the threshold.

These are the people Charles Spurgeon is addressing in this book. He uses simple, lively language so even a child can understand him. He peppered his words with everyday illustrations and measured common sense to bring the most hesitant to enter the Savior's presence.

Far from treating the “almost Christian” as a believer in his own right, thus erasing the reality of his danger, Spurgeon responds to his objections with biblical logic to lead him to abandon his doubts, to exercise faith in salvation and in opening up to a victorious assurance.

Author

Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) - A famous Baptist minister in the 19th century, he preached to large crowds for nearly 40 years. He founded many works in a wide range of fields. He is also the author of a large number of books, and in particular several collections of daily meditations: “The morning appointments” , “In the evening calm” , “The treasures of faith” , “Streams of water for my soul” , “The spoils of the King” (on the Psalms).
