Where is God?
There are no quick fixes or easy answers to suffering. However, we can be sure that God is still working, even when we are in pain and it is difficult to perceive his interventions. In this book, David Powlison uses the scriptures, personal testimonies, and the words of a hymn to help us understand that God is with us in our suffering and that He is at work when we go through difficulties. The author thus leads us to discover the full depth of God's grace.
Author
DAVID POWLISON holds an MA in Divinity from Westminster Theological Seminary. He is a professor, advisor and executive director of the Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation. He is also the editor of Journal of Biblical Counseling and the author of Towards a Renewed Helping Relationship and Speaking the Truth with Love .
Recommendations
"Whenever my friend David Powlison sheds new light on how to face hardship, I listen. Far from serving as banalities from the top of an ivory tower, David instead uses the scriptures as an anchor that he firmly fixes in our minds. It describes practical steps to attach ourselves to the God of the Bible who himself wrote the book on suffering himself. For several years now, David's wisdom has helped me live my life as a quadriplegic, and I highly recommend reading his book. He is a remarkable guide for those who walk the difficult, bloody road to Calvary on a daily basis. »

"The advice one receives in the ordeal is sometimes more damning than helpful. David Powlison ends this additional suffering by directing his readers to the gospel and showing them the solid foundation of the Word. He places the compass of the Word of God in our trembling hands and points out to us the true North: Jesus Christ himself. »

“Since David Powlison understands that a particularly painful ordeal often contributes to our great good, he is the perfect person to guide us through a training workshop on suffering and the grace of God. This book is, in fact, a training workshop in which the author teaches us to see the goodness of God and to discover his grace in suffering and through suffering. He does this by using the scriptures, the song What a Solid Foundation!, Our testimonies, and his. »

"Tender, heartwarming, and deeply biblical, this book is like a glass of cold water for those who walk through the wilderness of suffering. David Powlison is both a man who suffered and a wise counselor, and he helps us find God's goodness, his grace, and his gentle presence in our pains. We learn that God works in our trials, and in His hands our afflictions produce gold. I have abundantly highlighted my copy because I know I will consult this uplifting book often. »

“This little book says a lot about Bible wisdom for real life. I look forward to giving it to those who struggle to find a calming connection between the promises of the Bible and the painful realities of life in this fallen world. »
–Nancy Guthrie, author of the book Hearing Jesus Speak into Your Sorrow
"Yes and amen! David Powlison connects suffering to the tender and powerful God who is with us in our afflictions. God alone gives them meaning and purpose. On the one hand, this book offers an overview that communicates hope and encouragement. On the other hand, it contains treasures of wisdom that you will want to transcribe to meditate on. As he always does, David speaks in simple, practical and personal terms. If you live in this fallen world, you'll love this book!
