Undoubtedly the place occupied, in our collective unconscious, the involvement of the West in the practice of slavery as a system of socioeconomic exploitation of individuals has contributed to neglecting employment in the New Testament from the metaphor of the slave to speak of the Christian's relationship to Jesus Christ, or even to completely eliminate it even in our biblical translations, where we prefer the term “servant” to him.

This gap is now filled by this book which combines historical and philosophical overview, study of biblical texts and practical application.

Beginning by recalling the nature of slavery in the Greco-Roman world and the New Testament point of view on this subject, Murray Harris develops the use of this metaphor in relation to four themes: freedom, lordship , property and privilege.

He thus comes to give back to this metaphor, which is essentially Pauline, but not exclusively - John uses it several times in the Apocalypse -, its letters of nobility and to show all the richness of its content. A wealth to (re) discover.
