“Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. " Matthew 11:28

Christians can easily feel that Jesus is perpetually disappointed and frustrated with their Christian walk, or even that he is about to abandon them. They know what Jesus did for them, but often they have a superficial knowledge of him. What are the feelings that animate him when he considers the sins and failures of his people?

In Matthew 11, Jesus describes himself as “meek and lowly in heart,” longing for his people to find rest in him. This book draws on his words, delving into passages in the Bible that speak of Christ's affection for sinners to encourage weary and faltering believers on their journey to heaven.

Recommendations

“The heart of Christ is a fountain of grace for his redeemed. This book helps us to rediscover the immense compassion of which we are the object. Remembering these Bible truths will do your soul great good. "
–Benjamin Eggen, former coordinator of the blog La Rébellution; author of Thirst for more ? ; co-author of the book A life of challenges

“Each chapter of this book reveals the Son and exposes his heart like no other book. The author's discoveries lead our souls to new thinking and to the adoration of the most important being in our lives. "
–Rachel Bergeron, wife of a pastor-planter; writer on the blog unepetiteinfluence.com

" Sweet and humble of heart comes from the pen of a person who not only benefited from the reading of the Puritans, but who, above all, read the Bible under their tutelage. One little book would never be enough to give the full glory of the attributes of Christ, but this book skillfully expresses a concept that we frequently overlook: Christ is meek and lowly in heart, and He gives rest to those who are weary and weary. loaded. Written with pastoral sweetness imbued with soothing beauty, it highlights the contribution of twenty biblical passages to this portrayal of the heart of Christ. All this is brought together in order to bring consolation, strength and rest to believers. "
–DA Carson, New Testament Professor Emeritus, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School; co-founder, The Gospel Coalition

“In this timely work, Dane Ortlund draws our attention to the person of Jesus. Centered on the Bible and drawing on the best the Puritan tradition has to offer, this book helps us see the heart of God as revealed to us in Christ. He reminds us not only of the promises of rest and consolation that Jesus made to us, but also of the biblical vision of Jesus: a King rich in goodness and grace. "
–Russell Moore, Chairman, The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of The Southern Baptist Convention

“The title of this book immediately aroused in me a desire to know more, hope and gratitude. The message it contains balms every heart that sin or sorrow has pierced, inside or out. It is an invitation to taste the sweet consolations of a Savior who approaches us with tenderness and grace. But we know we deserve the opposite of him. "
–Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth, author; teacher and facilitator of Revive Our Hearts

“The magnificent and astounding truths contained in this book have transformed my life. Dane Ortlund makes us look up to the compassionate heart that Christ has for sinners and the afflicted, proving to us that Jesus is not a reluctant Savior, but rather is pleased to be merciful. If you are feeling bruised, tired or empty, this is the balm for you. "
–Michael Reeves, president and professor of theology, Union School of Theology, Oxford, UK; author of Rediscover the joy of praying

“On the steep, stony and often dark path from 'already' to 'not yet', nothing is more necessary for your weary heart than to know the beauty of the heart of Jesus. Only this beauty has the power to swallow up all the ugliness you will encounter along the way. I have never read a book that more carefully, comprehensively, and lovingly portrays the heart of Christ than this. As if I were listening to a wonderful symphony, different passages moved me in different ways. Each has made me feel immensely blessed to know that what it describes is the very heart of my Savior, Lord, Friend, and Redeemer. I cannot imagine anyone in the family of God who would not greatly benefit from spending time contemplating the heart of Jesus through the eyes of a guide as gifted as Ortlund. "
–Paul David Tripp, president, Paul Tripp Ministries; author of the books Instruments in the hands of the Redeemer and A dangerous call

“The Puritans devoted themselves body and soul to their Christ-centered practices: they saw the Bible as their lifeline, they exercised it like a muscle, and they relied on it like a bulletproof vest. They knew how to hate their sins without hating themselves, for they understood that the gracious Christ is an omnipresent person who understands our situation and our needs better than we do. They understood that we suffer because of sin. Dane Ortlund deftly reveals to the Christian reader the treasures of wisdom of the Puritans. Read this book and pray that the Holy Spirit will reveal Christ to you as the Puritans understood him. You will thus receive a whole new understanding of divine grace. "
–Rosaria Butterfield, former professor of English at Syracuse University; author of the books The Secret Thoughts of an Unusual Convert and The Gospel Comes with a House Key

“‟ He's so strong that he can afford to be gentle. ” This line from an old movie is not all about cutesy romanticism, considering the theological precision and pastoral love with which Dane Ortlund describes the heart of God filled with love for those who are weak, tired, captives of sin and despair. Knowledge transmitted in Sweet and humble of heart truly forms a river flowing from the throne of God, through the great pastors of the past, into a precious and powerful ministry, adapted to our time. "
–Bryan Chapell, senior pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church in Peoria, Illinois

“After just a few pages, I realized how out of the ordinary and essential this book is, in that it portrays to us the very heart of Christ. This book amazes us with the abundance and power of Christ's love for us. As striking as it is therapeutic, it is already one of the best books I have read. "
–Sam Allberry, apologist and lecturer; author of the books Is God Homophobic? and 7 lies about celibacy

“Dane Ortlund writes about what sounds too good to be true - the Lord is pleased to have mercy on you and me. Therefore, he carefully dissects key passages while drawing on the teachings of past saints. He convinced me, and I can't wait to be convinced again and again. "
–Ed Welch, Advisor and Faculty Member of the Christian Counseling & Educational Foundation

“Dane Ortlund leads us into the very heart of the incarnate God - emphasizing not only what Jesus has done for us, but also how he feels for us. Indeed, what he feels for us. Rooted in the Bible and inspired by the Puritan Thomas Goodwin, this book is a cure for broken hearts. "
–Michael Horton, J. Gresham Machen Chair; professor of systematic theology and apologetics at Westminster Seminary California

“Dane Ortlund helps us rediscover the heart of Jesus, that is, the very heart of the gospel. This exquisite book displays before our eyes the tender love that Jesus has for us in all its immensity. As you dive into the very heart of Christ, your own heart will warm in the fire of divine love. Ortlund brings to our attention (little by little so as not to bewilder us) a neglected theme that the Puritans nevertheless cherished and which makes us discover how much they grasped the beauty of the love of Jesus. Your soul needs this book. I therefore strongly recommend that you read it. "
–Paul E. Miller, author of A life in prayer and of J ‑ Curve: Dying and Rising with Jesus in Everyday Life

“This is one of the best books I have read in my life! "
–Mark Dever, senior pastor, Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Washington, DC; president of the 9Marks ministry

“It took me a few months to read this book without rushing. In my opinion, this is the best way to go through this book, that is, taking the time to reflect on the heart of Christ "for sinners and for the afflicted". The author takes the best of the works of John Calvin, John Flavel, Richard Sibbes, John Owen, John Bunyan, Thomas Goodwin and Jonathan Edwards, and reflects on the richness of various passages from the Old Testament and the New Testament. This makes his work a comforting tool for the crushed Christian. What we need most is Christ. He is an inexhaustible source of rest, joy and love. "
–Ivan Mesa (ThM, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary), editor for The Gospel Coalition (since 2014), where he selects books and oversees reviews, long-term programming and the Read the Bible project

" Sweet and humble of heart draws me to the heart of Christ and helps me draw the hearts of my students to Christ. It is the best book of the twenty-first century. "
- Bob Kellemen, Director of Studies and Biblical Counseling Teacher, Faith Bible Seminary

" Sweet and humble of heart is a touching and heartwarming book that will enrich your knowledge, spark your adoration, and fuel your personal worship. Most importantly, it will help you to know and love your God and Savior Jesus Christ and to trust Him. "
–Tim Challies, blogger, writer and pastor in Canada

Wow!
