John's account is by far the most original and the most moving of the four Gospels. The “disciple whom Jesus loved” describes in detail Jesus' long conflict with the religious authorities of his time, which ultimately led to his tragic death on a cross.

The author also recounts Jesus' prayer for the unity of all who claim to be in him and the announcement made to the apostles of the coming of the Comforter after his departure.

Once resurrected, Jesus had powerful encounters with his disciples, astonished to see him alive again: Mary in tears before the empty tomb, Thomas, absent during Jesus' first meeting with his disciples, and Peter, invited to rise up to follow the one who would make him one of the most ardent defenders of the Christian faith.
