Within a minute of our death, we will either enjoy a personal welcome from Christ, or we will see darkness for the first time like we have never seen before. Either way, our future will be irrevocably and eternally fixed.
Those who find themselves with Christ will be surrounded by many friends they have known on earth. Any descriptions of paradise they have heard will turn pale in the light of reality. Others, however, will find themselves surrounded by darkness in a place of endless dissatisfaction and regret. For them, death will be much worse than they imagined.
So while our relatives and friends are planning our funeral, we will be more alive than we have ever been. . Indeed, either we will see God on His throne, surrounded by angels and redeemed humanity, or we will feel an indescribable weight of guilt and abandonment. There is no other destination than these two extremes.
Being aware of the danger
I once read a tragic story about people who were having fun on the upper floors of a large building without knowing that a fire was raging in the lower floors. Likewise, many people are enjoying life now, comfortably ignoring the fact that their death is not only inevitable, but also much closer than they realize. Indeed, just like a building on fire, this world and all that we have accumulated in it will eventually be burnt (see 2 Peter 3:10).
Certain conditions are necessary to go to heaven. Let’s not imagine for a moment that we will be able to achieve this because our spouse has the right to enter it or because we have a child who is already there. No, this is an individual matter, and only those who meet these conditions will be allowed in.
Our problem, however, is that God does not accept us on our own terms. We cannot arrive at the gates of Heaven hoping for mercy if we have lived our lives by our standards. “And as it is reserved for men to die once, after which comes judgment” (Hebrews 9:27), it will be impossible for us to plead for special favors once we have passed from this earthly life to eternity.
Our only hope
Our only hope lies in God giving us credit for perfect righteousness that we could never achieve on our own . Once this justice is credited to our account, we are guaranteed access to Heaven when we die, and there is no intermediate step. As the Bible says, we will want to “leave this body and abide with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5: 8).
This is how it is possible: When Christ died on the cross, he fell. offered as a sacrifice for sinners, which God accepted. "He who did not know sin, he [God] made [Jesus] to become sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in him" (2 Corinthians 5:21). Even though Christ was perfect, God made him legally guilty of all of our sins. Those who believe that Christ did this for them receive, in return, the credit for his righteousness before God.
Thus, Christ was considered a sinner when he took upon himself the debt of our sins. As for us, when we receive the righteousness of Christ, God considers us saints. God has extremely high standards towards us but, because of his grace, he satisfies them himself through this amazing exchange, and it is the only way for us to enter the paradise of God.
When we receive righteousness from Christ, God also transforms our whole perspective. Christ further declares that “unless a man is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3: 3). How then can we receive the gift of righteousness and “be born again”?
The answer is that we need to admit our helplessness and our sinfulness before God while recognizing that we are completely dependent on his mercy. Our perception of what can make us acceptable to God absolutely needs to change. Indeed, all of our trust must be transferred to Christ, knowing that only He has the power to bear our sin.We need to believe in Jesus as the One who accomplished everything so that we can stand in the holy presence of God. "Believe in Christ" means, from what we know, that we must trust Him alone to provide us with everything we need to please God in this life and live with Him in Heaven forever. t4>
Here is a prayer you can use if you want to put your trust in Christ alone for your eternal salvation. And if you pray in faith, God will receive you.
Lord God, I know that I am a sinner and that it is impossible for me to save myself. I confess my utter inability to forgive my own sins or make my way to heaven. From now on, I want to place my trust in Christ alone as the one who took upon himself all my sins when he died on the cross. I believe he has done all that is necessary so that I may one day live in your holy presence.
I thank you because Christ has risen from the dead. I put my trust in him as much as I can. I am grateful to you for promising to accept me despite my many sins and failures. Father, I take you at your word. I thank you that I can face death now that Christ is my Savior. I thank you for this assurance that I have in you and for the fact that you will walk with me through the gates of death. Thank you for hearing my prayer. In the name of Jesus, amen!
