In this clear and practical book, Nancy Guthrie reveals what the bereaved really need, making us better able to interact with them. Drawing on the testimonies of hundreds of individuals who have lost a loved one as well as her own experience of grief, Nancy Guthrie offers specific guidance on what words comfort and what hurt, what gestures comfort and what hurt.
By addressing sensitive questions, such as "When and how to mention heaven?" or "What should our social media interactions with a grieving person look like?" this book prepares the reader to support grieving loved ones with wisdom and love.

Recommendations
"We will all, in our lifetime, accompany people who are grieving the death of a loved one. They may be hoping, perhaps unknowingly, that our words will comfort them, encourage them, and assure them of our sincere affection. What can we say to our relatives, friends, and others to bring them comfort in their time of sorrow? Is it better to say nothing and simply be there with them? This book by Nancy Guthrie helps us answer these questions. It contains excellent advice to guide us skillfully through those difficult times when there are no standards and no models, allowing us to better support those who are suffering."
-Serge Côté, Elder at the Assemblée Évangélique de la Rive-Sud, Quebec; General Manager, Publications Chrétiennes
"Most of us don't know what to say or how to help someone who is grieving. This wonderful book will help you feel more comfortable accompanying friends or family members who have just lost a loved one by giving you a better understanding of what they need most. I read this book on the plane on my way to a funeral. I learned valuable lessons that I was able to put into practice right away."
-Steve Grissom, founder, GriefShare
"In our fallen world, grief is constantly present. And while grief is common, so is the silence of friends and family members who don't know how to help us. This book breaks the silence and provides a voice of experience and wisdom that offers clear and practical advice. In a unique and compelling way, Nancy Guthrie shares the stories of many individuals who have recently experienced grief; their words, along with the author's synthesis, help us understand how to support (not hurt) our loved ones when grief comes knocking at their door. Do you want to be a good friend to those who are grieving the loss of a loved one? This book is for you."
-Jason Helopoulos, associate pastor, University Reformed Church, East Lansing, Michigan; author of A Neglected Grace: Family Worship in the Christian Home
"The day inexorably comes when we will lose a loved one. In this difficult time, the right words have the power to comfort us and direct our eyes to Christ. What You Need to Know About Grief gives voice to all those who have experienced the dark days after the death of a loved one; their advice is wise and valuable. For friends of the bereaved, this book can help you console them; it gives examples of words that will be like a healing balm for those who are going through grief - words shared by those who would have liked to hear them. These stories of people who have mourned and are still mourning the loss of a loved one will give assurance to believers: they will feel better equipped to sit by a grieving person and mourn with them."
-Mark Green, President, The White Horse Inn
"What You Need to Know About Grief is a timely and invaluable resource for anyone who wants to put into practice the biblical directive to weep with those who weep, but feels unable to. This book is profoundly practical, and I am personally grateful to have such a tool at my disposal. I will be sure to share it with anyone who wants to lovingly accompany the bereaved."
-Raechel Myers, co-founder, She Reads Truth
"Nancy Guthrie writes with a frankness about caring for people in pain. Bad examples give us pause: there are lessons to be learned, for example, from the poor consolation of Job's friends. What You Need to Know About Grief provides a detailed outline of what not to say and do when consoling someone. Of course, Nancy doesn't stop there; she also describes, in a moving way, the Christ-like comfort that believers are called to provide. With wisdom and compassion, she interweaves Scripture, her personal story, and those of a multitude of grieving people in an effort to encourage, qualify, and equip the reader to give grief its due and to care for those who suffer as Christ himself would."
-Bob Kellemen, chair of biblical counseling, Crossroads Bible College; author of God's Healing for Life's Losses: How to Find Hope When You're Hurting
"This book is tender and compassionate; it is clear, honest, gospel-centered, and practical. Because it comes from the author's own difficult experience, the tone is never distant or theoretical. I now know what gift to give to those who have lost a loved one and whom God places in my path."
-Paul David Tripp, president, Paul Tripp Ministries; author of Instruments in the Hands of the Redeemer and A Dangerous Call
"After the death of a loved one, it is difficult for us to express what we need. These honest and practical suggestions will help anyone whose heart is willing to walk with us in our grief."
-Kay Warren, co-founder, Saddleback Church; international speaker; author of Choose Joy
