This first volume on the Psalms of the Evangelical Commentary on the Bible (CEB) contains a general introduction to the Psalter and the commentary on Psalms 1–72. The introduction deals with issues such as the structure of the Psalter, the Messianic hope of the Psalms, the Psalms of imprecation, the titles and technical indications they contain. This introduction is the subject of an important supplement, written by Professor Émile Nicole (professor emeritus of the Old Testament at the Free Faculty of Evangelical Theology), which evokes some of the themes of recent research: the canon of the Psalms, the Psalms as a book and theology of the Psalter. The general context being thus analyzed, each psalm is then the subject of an exegetical study aimed at bringing out its meaning and message.

Author

Derek Kidner (1913–2008) was an Anglican pastor and Old Testament teacher, notably at Tyndale House (Cambridge). He is the author of several popular Bible commentaries.
