What Does Effective Church Leadership Look Like?In this controversial book, Pastor Jeramie Rinne clearly explains the work of elders by presenting a “job description” that draws on the Word of God.
This small book offers practical advice for newly established elders and helps Church members better understand and support their spiritual leaders. It will also encourage more experienced elders to embrace their calling with grace and wisdom, while giving them a clear vision of their ministry.
Author
Jeramie Rinne (M. Div., Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary) serves as the senior pastor of South Shore Baptist Church in Hingham, Massachusetts. He writes regularly in the 9Marks Journal and meditations for The Good Book Company. He also teaches textual preaching in workshops organized by The Charles Simeon Trust.Recommendations
“Jeramie Rinne writes in a clear and warm style for all church leaders, and for those members who care about the governance of their community. After showing the equivalence of the terms “pastor”, “shepherd”, “elder” or “bishop” in the New Testament, and while accepting that certain “elders” will be more theologically trained and paid for their service, he encourages responsible to free themselves from the model of a board of directors and to assume what the Bible asks of them: to be models, to care for the flock, to teach, to cultivate a life of prayer. It could have been guilty, but the author makes the reader want to move on. It advocates a plurality of managers, a culture of mutual trust and sharing of tasks. If the manager is to take care of the herd, he or she needs to know who is in it, which supports the establishment of membership. »
- GORDON MARGERY, author; retired pastor; professor of pastoral theology at the Biblical Institute of Geneva
“In a few short chapters, the author explains the role of the elders - the 'pastoral team' - of a local church in a clear, encouraging, realistic and biblical way. The book is rooted in contemporary society, and the author gives numerous examples from the experience of his Church. Some chapters require serious reflection on the relationship between the pastoral team and the council of the Church. I will not hesitate to give this book to the elders and to the future elders of my Church, because I do not know of another book that is as relevant on this subject.

“Leadership, like other gifts of the Spirit, is for the building up of the body of Christ. Paul makes it clear to Titus that the affairs of a church are not in order until proper leadership is in place. Responsibility for most of the unresolved issues in the life of a church can be attributed to gaps in its leadership. Jeramie Rinne painstakingly analyzes what the Bible teaches about the identity and role of the elder in the local church with fresh eyes and profoundly useful clarity. This is a book that elders can read together for their benefit, but it will also help assemblies pray for and support their leaders so that their calling will be a joy and not a burden. »
- ALISTAIR BEGG, Senior Pastor, Parkside Church, Cleveland, Ohio
“Jeramie Rinne demonstrates that it is possible to write comprehensively and concisely about the role and ministry of elders in the Church. What a valuable book! He has been both instructive and uplifting to me, offering me invaluable help in my role as pastor, regarding my love for Jesus and for his Church. I would be hard pressed to suggest another book on the subject that I could recommend without hesitation. »
- JARED C. WILSON, Director of Content Strategy, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary; author of Gospel Wakefulness and The Pastor's Justification
“Do you aspire to see in your Church a mature group of men of God working in conjunction with full-time pastors to care for the congregation, teach it and instruct him for discipleship? This book, though brief, is biblically rich, wise, and warm. It targets the collegial and essential nature of ministry and leadership in the Church. No matter what your opinion on how elders should be appointed, organized, or appointed, you will find enough content in this book to challenge, encourage, and guide all who exercise this ministry. »
