The history of the establishment of the biblical canon, especially its origins, is a subject that has been relatively neglected. In this book, Meredith Kline engages in a study of the doctrine of Scripture by analyzing ancient Near Eastern treatises and their theological relevance to answer the following fundamental question: "What is the Bible?" He presents a somewhat peculiar response, but one which is very much in keeping with the new direction taken in his formulation of biblical canonicity.

In The Structure of Biblical Authority , Meredith Kline explains how the authority of Scripture is not just tied to its ontology. He shows us that Scripture, in its material form, constitutes a covenant document which is ultimately the source of its intrinsic authority. The author particularly focuses his study on the Old Testament, but he also suggests that his main theses might apply to the New Testament.
