The New Testament evokes the Old Testament very extensively by direct quotations, allusions and references which imply prior knowledge of its readers.

The logical paths taken by New Testament authors can often be confusing, as biblical revelation predates them. If we fail to understand the context, culture, and way of thinking of inspired writers, we will only partially - if not sometimes falsely - grasp their point. It is therefore crucial to study the subject seriously, if one wishes to understand the message of the New Testament and transmit it as faithfully as possible to the Church and to the world.

Greg K. Beale expertly and pedagogically introduces us to it, presenting the various types of referencing of Old Testament texts in the New Testament, as well as the reasons for these quotations and allusions. It evokes the different approaches to the question and the debates about it, offering the reader a theological and hermeneutical framework for his study of the texts. The author stresses, among other things, the importance of taking into account the cultural context - notably the Judaic backgrounds - of the texts.

Written in a rigorous yet accessible manner, this manual provides numerous scriptural examples as well as extensive bibliographic references. In short, it is a veritable catalog for anyone called to study, preach and teach the Bible.
