Samuel Rutherford composed a large number of works, almost all of which are forgotten today. Like his contemporary John Bunyan, he wrote his greatest writings as he was persecuted for preaching the gospel. It was in exile that this Scottish theologian wrote most of his most famous letters. These were so appreciated by their recipients that they were quickly put together after his death.

This abridged edition of the classic collection brings together fifty-seven letters from Samuel Rutherford intended for Christians in pain. Written in the colorful and vigorous style of the theologians of that time, this series of letters is considered the most remarkable that the literature of the Reformed churches can count. They are regarded today as excellent resources for building up and consoling Christians. The most humble of Church leaders and Christians will be strengthened by the reading of these letters.

Recommendations
“I wish that long after my death the world would remember that I considered Rutherford's letters to be the human work that most closely resembles the inspired scriptures. "
–Charles H. Spurgeon

" As surprising as it may seem in a world where voluminous works are in the spotlight, this little book by Samuel Rutherford, among all the books that our family has, is undoubtedly the one that we have loaned or quoted most often to our friends.
–Sinclair B. Ferguson, Professor of Systematic Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary; Bible teacher, Ligonier Ministries

» (p. 76.) Un beau modèle de foi.
