<transcy>Survivor in spite of myself (Rescapé malgré moi)</transcy>
April 17, 1975. The Khmer Rouge purge of its inhabitants Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia.
This traumatic exodus leads Koeun straight to forced labor, deep in a crude countryside. Stunned by propaganda speeches, he is starved, mistreated, humiliated. He thinks he's seen it all.
Until the day when horror strikes him full force: mass graves. Yawning. Putrid. Revolting. This is what "exile to the country of origin" is.
There is only one solution: flight.
A frantic rush through the jungle follows, with two companions as terrified as he is. They risk death at any moment, lost in this hostile nature and constantly hunted.
And yet, in the midst of all the dangers, a voice. But who is she, and why does she seem to want to help him?
